HBU Students Travel to Cambridge for Summer Hebrew Study (April 12, 2005) - Seven students majoring in Biblical languages will have the experience of a lifetime this summer as they attend a summer school course in Hebrew at the Centre for Modern Hebrew Studies, Cambridge University. All seven students have been awarded scholarships for the course through Cambridge. Heather Clark (77036), Josh Dyson (77536), Tracy Gorman (77581), Tonya Hall (77450), Jessica Lankford (77573), Angie Westmoreland (77581) and Ryan Wiley (77441) will travel to England and attend the Cambridge University Summer Hebrew Ulpan. The course will consist of five hours of intensive language instruction daily as well as various activities, including a visit to the Taylor-Schechter Genizah collection, a priceless accumulation of centuries-old Hebrew manuscript material and Judaica, recovered from the Cairo Genizah in 1896-97 and now housed at the Cambridge University Library. “This is a wonderful opportunity for these students to learn Hebrew in ways that they have not yet experienced,” said Dr. Jamie Johns, assistant professor of Christianity. “The quality of the Cambridge faculty combined with the Ulpan’s immersion method of Hebrew study will yield a unique learning opportunity. I am most grateful for our students’ keen interest and for the opportunity provided by the Cambridge faculty.” The Biblical languages major is designed to advance student ministries in teaching and preaching, in the work of Biblical research and original scholarship, and in the service of Bible translation.
